Will my Arizona personal auto policy provide coverage if I drive my vehicle into Mexico?

As with most if not all border States to Mexico, each instructs you to at least purchase 3rd party liability (that is $ for the other guy if you are at fault in an accident) from a valid Mexico insurance company. FYI, they are not all the same. For the State of Arizona, the following is published for the benefit of their citizenry who wish to drive their Arizona registered vehicle into Mexico. A very valid reason as one of the most popular destinations in Mexico is just across their border…Puerto Penasco, or Rocky Point as it is commonly known.

Will my Arizona personal auto policy provide coverage if I drive my vehicle into Mexico?

“Mexican law requires that you purchase separate liability coverage from a Mexican insurer before operating your vehicle in Mexico. Your Arizona personal auto policy may provide some limited coverage on a limited basis (within 25-50 miles of the Mexican border), but this coverage does not meet the insurance requirements of the Republic of Mexico. Failure to purchase proper Mexican liability insurance may result in many hours in a Mexican jail or a heavy fine if you are involved in an accident while operating your vehicle in Mexico.”

Obviously, the answer is, YES, Mexico does require 3rd party liability from a recognized Mexican insurance company, and no, your personal auto insurance written in Arizona is not recognized in the country of Mexico. For a few dollars a day, you can purchase not only the liability insurance, but one that also comes with a large number of other covered items and benefits, such as Travel Assistance, Legal Assistance, Towing, Medical Payments, etc… All are determined by their insurance companies “Terms & Conditions”.

So don’t wait. Go and enjoy all the good things our neighbors to the South can offer. Fine dining, and not so fine dining. 4 star hotels and no star hotels. Beautiful beaches and, well, you get the picture. Lest we forget, ALL for very little dinero!

Will my New Mexico Auto insurance policy cover me in Mexico?

Rather than bore you with a narrative of what I know after 32 years in the insurance business, I will just let this actual text from the New Mexico Department of Insurance answer this question:

” Will my New Mexico personal auto policy provide coverage if I drive my vehicle into Mexico?

Mexican law requires that you purchase separate liability coverage from a Mexican insurer before operating your vehicle in Mexico. Your New Mexico personal auto policy may provide some limited coverage on a limited basis (within 25-50 miles of the Mexican border); however, this coverage does not meet the insurance requirements of the Republic of Mexico. Failure to purchase proper Mexican liability insurance may result in many hours in a Mexican jail or a heavy fine if you are involved in an accident while operating your vehicle in Mexico. Check with your company or agent to determine the coverage available under your specific policy.”

After having personally assisted someone who relied upon their own personal auto policy, I know. Having to find this out, after the fact, is not very wise, but rather stupid. When for a few bucks a day, you can purchase 3rd party liability insurance which can certainly help, and won’t hurt.

Anyone who has family, friends, or even work in Mexico, can benefit from our knowledge, and certainly our insurance products for both sides of the border. We insure U.S. residents or citizens traveling to Mexico, and we can insure Mexico Residents or citizens traveling into the U.S.

Will my Texas Auto insurance policy cover me in Mexico?

Not long ago, I decided to write the TDI (Texas Dept. of Insurance) to see if they could, if they would, answer a question that I had regarding insurance regulations or agreements between the two countries.

I asked, “What would happen if a Mexican citizen had an accident in the State of Texas and depended upon their own Mexican auto insurance company?” An actual copy of the response is below.

LetterOfTexasDeptInsurance

In addition to answering the question about a Mexican citizens auto insurance being applied in Texas, they also addressed the issue of a Texas citizens auto policy extending into the Republic of Mexico.

This is an area that we, and especially our border States, have been trying to educate our citizenry forever, and that is;

“Texas does not have a reciprocal agreement with Mexico. We do not recognize Mexican Auto insurance policies, nor does Mexico recognize Texas auto insurance policies.”

In addition to this statement, the Texas Department of Insurance also publishes a pamphlet for this specific scenario. It too, can be viewed directly after the recent TDI correspondence.

We thoroughly enjoy our job, in helping our many friends, and families with their international insurance needs, no matter where. Thank you!

Sierra Tarahumara Chihuahua, México (Video)

Back in 1992 I was fortunate to be President of Caravanas Voyagers, an RV Tour Operator out of EL Paso Texas. We specialized in organizing RV tours throughout the world, however specializing in the Republic of Mexico!

One of our most popular tours was one that incorporated the use of the Mexican Railroad, or what is now called the Ferrocarril Chihuahua al Pacifico. We would load, depending upon each RV’s length, from 15 to 22+ RV’s onto railway flatcars. We would have a Wagonmaster (an experienced leader of the group) and a tailgunner (one who was generally mechanically gifted) who trailed the caravan. Also included was a “guide”, one who was legally licensed with the proper permits for this vocation. We generally ran about 4-6 different routes a season, which of course ran during the winter months, so we could count on a larger RVing crowd from all over North America – Snow Birds! Those who left the North to enjoy the more sunny and warm temperatures of the South during the Winter.

The Copper Canyon, to me, is one of the most unique areas of the world. Traveling by Mexican train was also, obviously unique. I have many, stories but not enough room or time, to relish. Some sad, many funny, and some downright hysterical.

The canyon itself has over 400+ miles with 39 bridges, and 86 tunnels. I remember going into one tunnel, and looking back to see the end of the train coming out of the other tunnel. It is said, the size of the canyon is over 4 and a half times larger than our own Grand Canyon. I personally have been a passenger 3 times, and found every trip to by unique, fun, and remarkable trip.

There are waterfalls, rivers, huge canyons, and Tarahumarans, native Indians to Mexico. These are the peoples who you might have seen on documentaries, who are famous for their long distant running prowess.

I have gone on way to far…for now.

Please take the time to relax, and enjoy one of the most unique landscapes in the world GOD has created. AND, pay special attention to the credits of the gentleman who produced this wonderful video at the end of the film. His name is Carlos Rangel, pictures by Manuel Chávez. It’s about 9+ minutes long, but hey, trust me, there is nothing on t.v. anyway and the scenery will blow your mind.

Fines for driving with no auto insurance, in U.S.A.

When you arrive in the U.S., it is important to remember that you are subject to the same traffic laws as all Americans are. Even if you are from the Republic of Mexico, you are not provided any more leniency than Americans receive when traveling in Mexico and breaking the traffic laws. Paisanaos and unknowledgable Americans might be brave enough to pay the “bite” in Mexico but under no circumstances should you attempt that in the U.S. Doing so will only get you in more serious, and I mean serious trouble.

In Texas for example, traffic laws and the fines if you break them are different from the rest of the U.S. So, for the sake of understanding, here are but a few of the laws, and the fines you must pay if you are caught breaking them. DWI means driving while drunk, as is a VERY serious charge.

•$100 USD$: Driving without a license
•$250 USD$: Driving without insurance
•$1,000 USD$: Driving While Intoxicated (DWI)
•$1,500 USD$: 2 or more DWI offenses
•$2,000 USD$: DWI conviction with a blood alcohol content (BAC) of .16 or more

If you are charged with a DWI, it will remain on your record for up to 7 years. It could also prevent you from acquiring or renewing your U.S. Resident or Green Card.

The obvious thing to do is to obey the U.S. traffic laws. You are a guest, and just as an American is expected to obey Mexico’s traffic laws, so are you while in the U.S.

Purchasing American Tourist Auto insurance is fast and easy. You can purchase it by the day, week, month or year. This coverage is underwritten and administered by a legally licensed and authorized U.S. insurance company.

Don’t take the chance of being pulled over by a police officer and not having prove of U.S. tourist auto insurance, it is an expensive fine, and one that is very inexpensive to purchase. Just go to www.mxici and then click on Seguros para U.S.A. for a very easy and quick application to purchase your low cost, and high value policy.

We hope this helps you in your Mexico travels. If you have any questions concerning this or anything else regarding travel into Mexico. Please let us know, we will do our best to assist you.

$1,500 USD$: 2 or mas ofensas de DWI (manejando ébrio)

When is 13th Annual Rocky Point Bike Rally?

I just became aware of a unique, and fun filled annual event called the Rocky Point Bike Rally. It takes place every year, and this is their 13th year.

A customer and friend of ICI brought it to my attention today. He purchased his motorcycle policy online and filled me in on the event.

The rally apparently is extremely popular, notching almost 5,000 riders. It begins November 7th and goes thru the 10th. Sounds like a great 3 day weekend.

They charge a nominal registration fee of $ 10.00 that goes to charity. The event draws from riders throughout the U.S. and Mexico.

Puerto Peñasco, or Rocky Point to gringos, is an extremely popular travel destination, especially if you live in Arizona, New Mexico or certain areas of Texas. This tourist village is usually the closest to theses three States to the ocean. People with RV’s, and especially college students of Arizona and Arizona State frequent this gorgeous spot on Mexico’s north end of the Sea of Cortez.

We have included a link that provides information on where the event begins, and answers a couple of simple questions regarding what is needed to cross into Mexico. The link is: http://www.rockypointrally.com/

We have a fantastic insurance product for your bike, if you intend on joining. OR, if not this rally, maybe in the future you may be considering a ride with a few friends. You might also really, really consider purchasing your International Health & Accident insurance at the same time, as your U.S. or Canadian Health insurance most probably will not cover you in Mexico, and many Mexican Motorcycle insurance policies provide very little if any medical coverage on their policies.

So call a few friends, and join like minded biker enthusiasts for a fun filled weekend!
